Our Dearest Maxx

It takes cooperation and love for animals to make magic happen in the world of animal welfare. Our handsome Maxx flew out of Lubbock last weekend on a private plane through Pilots N Paws. He was taken straight to a foster home in Oklahoma City. Deb D. Young of Lubbock picked Maxx up from the Haven and transported him to the airport. We appreciate her so much. We would also like to thank Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest, especially to Maribeth Knierem of Chicago and Julie Covey of Austin. A foster home was waiting for Maxx as soon as he got off the plane. His foster mother, Katherine Garrison, has already called to report that Maxx is doing well and is being very well taken care of and loved. All of us at the Haven want to thank the people involved in transporting Maxx in such a professional and organized manner. We love Maxx and know that great things await him!

DPS Turns Orphan Dogs Into K-9 Officers

Written by: Meredith Hillgartner (KLBK/KAMC)

Sergeant Bryan Witt is searching for an officer to join the Lubbock Department of Public Safety,

and he is recruiting at the Haven Animal Shelter. “It is amazing some of the quality of dogs that we find out in these places,” Sgt. Witt said. A quality dog like 'Audi’. Since the program started in the early 90's, Sgt. Witt said their office has used more than 50 dogs from animal shelters.

Not all dogs in the DPS are from shelters but Sgt. Witt said about 45 dogs are working for the state right now.

“We’re not looking for any type of breed,” Sgt. Witt said. “We’re looking for a dog that is very playful, very active, has a strong drive.” If a dog passes the test, they get sent to Austin for 12 weeks of training. “We’ll use them on the road and they’ll search for drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin,” Sgt. Witt said. It's not all work, Witt said their K-9 officers think working is a game.

“We scent those toys with the narcotics so anytime these dogs go out and search for narcotics it is like a game to them, they are looking for their toy,” Sgt. Witt said. “All they are working for is to praise and to have fun.” If a dog, does not pass training, they usually are adopted by an officers family, but Sgt. Witt said many their best K-9 officers have come from shelters. “It’s neat to come out to these places,” Sgt. Witt said. “Not only for us, but so we can show people that you can find good quality dogs out at these shelters.”

Doggie Tea Party!

The Haven staff, volunteers, and doggies had a blast at the Doggie Tea Time Party last Saturday. One of our volunteers, Christine, made all of the outfits. Isn't she absolutely talented?! Penelope (the one in the green dress, pink bow, and pink purse) came in 3rd place in the fashion show! The names of the staff and volunteers from left to right in the group picture are Dr. Wilbanks (owner of The Haven), Christine, Alexis, Scout, Dalette, and Angie.

Christmas for the Animals was a Great Success!

Thank you so much to everyone who brought gifts to the animals during the Christmas season.

Prince, Sweet, Cher, and all of the other residents of the Retired Canine Bed and Breakfast

thank you for the special food, and so do the cats-Jennifer, Midnight, Faith, Presley, and others.

All of the animals are enjoying their blankets and new beds.  Little Marbles (a tiny Chihuahua) has been showing off her new sweater

and the elderly animals can now have an easier time getting into the vehicles due to the new ramps they received.

We received many gift cards which will help us in buying the extra, but necessary things to improve our shelter.

We are always overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and generosity of people who come out to show their love for our animals.

We appreciate each and every one of you and appreciate your kindness.

He is leaving for the Marine Corp. on November 18th

and this weekend was his last Saturday with us.

We will miss him dearly, so everyone, please help us wish him good luck on his endeavors!

Freebirds (on South Loop 289) invited us to spend the day at their location for an adoption event.

We had a wonderful time, and they were so inviting and helpful all day long!

We are looking forward to going back soon (hopefully once a month!)  Below are some pictures from the March event.

The dedication of the Haven’s new building  “Retired Canines Bed and Breakfast” was held on December 8, 2012.

Dr. Wilbanks recognized the family of John Whitney, whose generous donation made this building possible.

She also recognized Darby and Dalette Adams, two of the Haven’s volunteers who played such an important role in planning and completing this building.  The Waters Elementary DI Team also sang their Haven song and has since become some of our greatest volunteers.

Thank you again to all who have helped turn this building in to a home for our animals.

Senior Dog Retirement Home is complete!

We have spent the past several months working to complete our newest building at the Haven--the Senior Dog Retirement Home!  Now, we have a 10-pen condominium for our senior canines at the Haven.  It is nicer than many human homes, we think!  It has air conditioning and heat for the dogs' comfort, completely washable walls and floors, and nice large pens outside for the dogs to spend time in.  We will be hosting an open house in September so that everyone can come and see this wonderful building and meet the new tennants.  A special thanks to Darby and dalette Adams for their time and dedication to completing this building.  Darby donated hundreds of hours of time and construction expertise to finish out this wonderful building!  Below are a couple of pictures.
